How do I report illegal dumping?
Call the Jefferson County Environmental Health Dept. 385-9444 or the Sheriff’s Office at 385-3831 to report illegal dumpsites. For other information and assistance on illegal dumping problems call Public Works at 385-9178.

What are the MRW Hazardous Waste Facility fees? There is no charge for Jefferson County residents to dispose of household hazardous waste. Businesses that qualify as Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators are charged a fee determined by a fee schedule.

Where and how do I report a hazardous waste spill?
For emergency situations, call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 360-385-3831 or 1-800-552-0750, and follow the directions. You may also call 911 to report the emergency. What do I do with batteries and contaminated gas?
The Moderate Risk Waste Facility (MRW) in the Port Townsend Industrial Park will take auto and marine lead-acid batteries, and rechargeable NiCad and NiMH dry cell batteries. Contaminated gasoline is also accepted in 5-gallon containers. Please call 379-6911 to schedule disposal of larger quantities. More About Batteries (pdf)

What do I do with fluorescent light bulbs and tubes?
Although neither fluorescent light tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs are regulated as “hazardous waste” they do contain small amounts of mercury and pose an environmental risk. Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes should be taken to the Moderate Risk Waste Facility (MRW) at the Port of Port Townsend or to the Recycling Center located at the Transfer Station off of Jacob Miller Rd. (look for the sign at the front of the building.) Businesses (Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators) disposing of intact fluorescent light tubes and ballasts are required to take them to the Moderate Risk Waste Facility (379-6911) for disposal. What do I do with latex paint?
Latex paint is not a hazardous waste. If it is hardened, remove the lid and put the can in with your trash. Latex paint is not accepted at the Moderate Risk Waste Facility.

What do I do with propane tanks?
Small propane cylinders containing gas are accepted at the Moderate Risk Waste Facility (MRW) for disposal. All 5-gallon and larger propane tanks that contain propane gas can be taken to Surburban Propane, 25 Seton Road, Port Townsend (385-5096) or Sunshine Propane, 10853 Rhody Drive, Port Hadlock (385-5797) where they will be accepted for disposal for a fee. Empty propane containers from which all gas has been burned off may be taken to the Transfer Station on Jacob Miller Road or the Solid Waste Drop-box Site in Quilcene for disposal.
